I’ve never been much good at dressing for summer, jeans and jumpers make up 90% of my wardrobe so when the temperatures top 20 degrees I start to panic. I’ve been working this month, with the sudden influx of heatwaves we’ve been having, on trying to build up my summer wardrobe staples and have managed to tie down a few that I now wouldn’t be without! That being said, as I write this the temperature’s dropped back down to 16 degrees and it’s peeing it down with rain, but hey that’s the great British summer and that’s what we’re working with! So when the sun is shining, here’s what I need in my wardrobe.
Havaianas. Un-fun fact about me, I hate having my toes touch. Sometimes I remember my toes are touching and have to start spreading them out in my shoes. Like now. Anyway shoes + heat =NO, so come June I’ve pulled my flip flops out of the back of my wardrobe and I’m living in them. I never saw the point in spending money on flip flops until I picked up these Havaianas in TKMaxx and now I wouldn’t be without them! They’ve got straps that don’t go as far back on your foot as normal flip flops, so they don’t rub + they’re honestly so comfortable. I always feel a bit sad when September rolls around and they go back in the cupboard!
Denim Shirt. God I love my denim shirt. In England we get a lot of ‘summer’ days where it seems warm until you’re actually outside, and then there’s actually a chill in the air. The denim shirt is the perfect extra layer to throw over your tee to protect you from the wind chill without causing you to overheat. I wear this tied up with skirts and skinny jeans, layered over leggings and tees, it’s a total wardrobe staple! Mine is actually from the men’s section in All Saints, I loved the star studs on it!
Bralettes. When it’s hot out the last thing I want is layers of padding and underwire round my chest, so I tend to pretty much live in bralettes! Being bigger chested I struggled to find bralettes to fit, but I stumbled upon the Aerie Bralettes last year and haven’t looked back! They’re soft, comfortable, and go up to a size 20, big boobed ladies unite!
Maxi + Midi Skirts. Maybe it’s a sign I’m getting old, but I never wear short skirts anymore! Especially in the heat, nobody wants the backs of their thighs getting stuck to their chair! I love maxi + midi skirts right now, they can be dressed up or down really easily, are appropriate for work + play, and also leave room for a food baby. Total win.
The Zara Dress. I picked this up on a whim last month when the first few warm days started to spring up. It cost me a whole £17 and I’m pretty sure I’ve already got my money’s worth. Whilst the neckline + sleeve shape isn’t the most flattering on me, I’ve gotten so much wear out of it. I love the dipped ruffle hem and the simple stripe pattern, it’s perfect for chucking on on a hot day and not having to think about. I wear it with a heeled sandal for work, or with my denim jacket over in the evenings. It also has pockets – need I say anymore? I really wish I’d picked this up in another colour!
The Monki Dress. Remember how I said I suck at dressing for summer? Well this is a prime example, I ended up in London in jeans and a card when temperatures topped 30 degrees, so I had to dart into Monki on Carnaby Street for an outfit change. I picked up this cute dress, which wins points for being work and play appropriate, not too hot, and having a drawstring waist! It was also pretty reasonable too, I think I payed around £25 for it, and have already worn it three or four times. And again, it has pockets, so what could be better?
I’m currently in the midst of trying a Summer 10×10 challenge so I’ll report back on how that goes!
