I’m entering March with some real mixed emotions. It’s normally one of my favourite months, Spring is arriving, the days get lighter, the weather gets better, my birthday also falls in March so it tends to be quite a social month for me. However this year March feels a little different, it’s another month on treatment where I’m feeling crappy and my diet is restricted, I’ve not been able to leave the house much recently never mind make fun plans or travel about a bit. So my March To Do List is all about taking it a bit easier, finding fun in the slow and cutting myself some slack.
Invest quality time into relationships.
During my time on treatment the relationships outside my home have definitely suffered. With me feeling rotten and not leaving the house, it’s hard to organise time to catch up with friends and family. On top of that, when I do manage to connect with people, I’m exhausted, struggling with brain fog and engaging is hard. It’s also hard to keep up with messages even, when my mood is low or my head hurts, the last thing I want to do is pick up my phone. This month I want to try and connect with my friends and family in shorter but better bursts. Whether that’s a 15 minute catch up over Facetime, or having someone over for a quick coffee, I want to focus on the quality of my engagement with pals, not quantity.
Make the most of the changing weather.
I’ve missed time spent outside the last month, it seems my energy spikes never coincide with a sunny day. As we head into March hopefully the weather will improve and the days will be getting longer, and I really want to tap into that time. Whether that means just sitting out on my balcony with a cup of tea and a warm jacket, or a short walk when I feel well enough, I want to be outside more this month.
Spend energy on different tasks.
My usual fun activities, eating out, meeting a pal for coffee, walks in the forest, days exploring new places, they’re kinda off the table right now. I’ve been feeling really frustrated with that, feeling kinda incapable and useless. So this month, I want to realign myself and find things I CAN enjoy even with reduced energy and health. I might not be able to spend an afternoon browsing the shops with a friend, but I can certainly spend half an hour at the local library. I may not be able to go explore a new town, but I could do my weekly shop at a farmer’s market instead of the supermarket. I won’t be treating myself to a dinner out for my birthday, but I could definitely book myself in for a massage instead. My mantra for this month is ‘different not worse’.
Embrace the fruits of early Spring.
March brings with it an abundance of seasonal veggies, cabbages, purple sprouting broccoli, leeks, spinach, carrots, potatoes. I’m excited to shop seasonally and try some new recipes embracing what’s available locally. Similarly, freesias, alstroemeria, tulips and hydrangeas are all in bloom in March, I’m excited to track down fresh bouquets to have around the home.
