Connor did very well on the gift front this Christmas, amongst half my ASOS wishlist and a handful of new stationery and candles, I unwrapped this beautiful gold bottomed terrarium. I’ve wanted a terrarium for the longest time, but it never seemed like the right time to get one, since we’ve been moving about a lot this year, but with our move into the new place looming, I decided to get cracking + build my perfect terrarium.
I knew I wanted a mix of succulents + cacti, but I wasn’t sure exactly what I wanted so I headed to the local garden centre with an open mind. I ended up picking up a bag of soil, Cactus Focus food, 5 different small succulents and cacti, as well as some moss for the top. I’d also been doing some reading on the healing properties of crystals, so I bought a few small ones to add in as decoration – it can’t hurt, right?! The whole lot cost just under £25, but I’m sure you could do it cheaper if you shopped around a little, I just picked bits up from the garden centre for convenience!
We put in around 6cm of soil, and it took a bit of wiggling, but we got all five plants in! We added a few more spoonfuls of soil at the end to make sure everything was well planted. A little water, and then I got to breaking the moss up and placing it around the plants. I just adore the smell of this kind of moss, it’s so fresh and herby, and makes me think of Lord of the Rings, weirdly. We didn’t need much (if they’d sold one, I could have had a bag less than a quarter of the size), but I think it looks just perfect.
Then it was just a case of adding in the crystals I bought! I went with two small pieces of Rose Quartz, which are meant to promote love, reduce stress and soothe the mind, a piece of dark red Tourmaline, which is supposed to clear negative energy and promote healing, and one piece of Sunstone, which is touted to help with fears + phobias, as well as reducing stress and depression. Who knows if they’ll work, but the cats certainly seemed to like them!
And that’s it! I’m so pleased with it, and I think one or two more might sneak into our flat before long!
Are you a terrarium kinda gal?
