Stockings are something that our family LOVE to do, it’s so nice to open a little selection of gifts that don’t have to cost the earth, but are useful, thoughtful things you will love and use. We always use it as an excuse to stock up on things we might need, or little cutesy things you wouldn’t necessarily buy yourself! Over the years the job of filling my stocking has gone from my lovely mum to Con, who’s family never really did stockings, so he finds it a little tricky. I thought I’d write my guide to creating the perfect Christmas stocking, I split it up into categories, and picking one or two from each is guaranteed to create a well rounded, lovely stocking for any of the ladies in your life. I’ve tried to keep all the products under £15 with the odd exception, so a lot of these would also make great gifts on their own too!
The Winter Warmers
I think this part of a stocking is ESSENTIAL, something cosy and snuggly to help keep you warm throughout the colder months. Festive socks, a cute bobble hat, some new gloves or if you’re feeling REALLY fancy, everyone loves a pair of cashmere socks. On my list this year is a cosy new beanie from the White Company, which isn’t exactly budget friendly, but I can already tell will be a wardrobe staple for years to come.
SURELY the best part of a stocking is the snacks? Everyone loves cracking into a Chocolate Orange on Christmas morning, so it would be rude not to have a few snacks in a stocking! For me it’s about striking a balance between a good chocolatey treat (I’m a Terry’s Honeycomb Crunch Chocolate Orange gal myself) and little foodie treats that suit someone’s likes. Is your pal a coffee lover? Why not get them a bag of coffee from their favourite independent coffee shop? This grow your own coffee set would be great too! These little Merry Christmas Setsfrom Hotel Chocolat are always a people pleaser, I’m pretty partial to their Salted Caramel Puddles, and would love to see a bag of those in my stocking. I’m also hoping Father Christmas hears my pleas for a bottle of the Starbucks Gingerbread syrup, to make my coffees a little more festive at home! You can’t go wrong with little bottles of alcohol, and my mum always used to include a yard of Jaffa Cakes which always went down well.
I do love this category, this is where I’d include nice versions of the little bits you use every day. A new soft suede coin purse, a cute keyring, a pretty new makeup bag. A cute reusable coffee cup, or water bottle – the Chilly bottle my dad gave me last year is one of my most used gifts ever! I’m hoping to find an Anthropologie Zodiac Coin Pursein my stocking this year, my current coin purse is on it’s last legs!
We all love a pampering treat or two, and a stocking is the perfect place for a few beauty treats! I always recommend a Lush Bath bomb, or a shower gel if your pal isn’t a bath fan, you can’t go wrong. It’s a great place to stock someone up on their perishable favourites, things like their go to mascara (mine is the Marc Jacobs Volume Noir Mascara), or a miniature of their favourite perfume. There are tons of great beauty gift sets at the moment that are reasonably priced, I’m hoping for the Origins Mini Masks Skincare Gift, which is a great affordable gift on it’s own, or something you could split up amongst friends! There’s also a wealth of great mini palettes out in time for Christmas, I’ve got my eye on the Zoeva Caramel Melange Eyeshadow Travel Palette, which looks right up my street.
Everyone loves a good book in their stocking! You can’t go wrong with a non fiction, coffee table or recipe book as a rule, I love Oliver Bonas for their selection, this year I’m hoping for their Whisky Made Me Do It Cocktail Recipe book. Fiction can be harder to pick, unless there’s specifically something on their wishlist, but you generally can’t go wrong with one of your favourite reads, or I always love the Little Black Classics.
Finally, my favourite category! This is the category for beautiful things we all love but would never buy ourselves. Fancy handcream, little trinket bowls, candles and sparkly jewels, I think it’s such a lovely idea to treat someone to the kind of things that we’d never buy ourselves.
There we go, that should be enough to get you going!
What are you hoping to find in your stocking this year?
