We’re in summer’s last gasp right now, with autumn right around the corner, and it won’t come as a surprise to you that I’m so ready for it. Autumn is my favourite time of year, and there are so many things I’m excited to do this season.
Leave space in your diary. Autumn is best appreciated by slowing down. Leave yourself time unscheduled, unburdened, to just do as you please. Take a slow walk in the forest, read a book listening to the rain, admire the steam rising from a hot cup of tea.
Eat seasonally and well. Autumn provides an abundance of delicious fruits and veggies. Pick blackberries on Sunday morning walks to bake into crumbles in the afternoon. Slow roast butternut squash to toss into pastas or stews. Bring the slow cooker out of hibernation and try a new recipe. Check out the last issue of Hunting For Autumn for some inspiration.
Have a duvet day. My favourite autumn days are the ones where the rain doesn’t let up, and I have no plans. I’ll drag my duvet and favourite cushions to the sofa, arrange myself with a stack of books and snacks, alternate between hot coffee, herbal teas and creamy hot chocolates, and while away the day reading, watching Netflix and intermittently snoozing. After a season of busy, my body is calling out for this.
Curate the perfect autumn wardrobe. Pull out earthy and rich jewel tones, play with texture, bring your favourite boots out again. Play with layering unexpected items, and find new ways of wearing old favourites.
Plan a cosy evening outside. I’m so excited to utilise our balcony space this autumn. We’ve hung festoon lights, and I’ve bought some heavy duty blankets to snuggle up under. We’ve perfected our hot spiced cider recipe to drink, and I’ve got a secret stash of giant marshmallows to toast. A chilled playlist, and a night with pals under the stars? Yes please.
Embrace autumn bakes. Bake Off being back on our screens is all the encouragement I need to get in the kitchen. I had so much fun perfecting my Pumpkin Spice Cookie Recipe that for once I’m excited to do more baking. I think I’m going to try making these Spiced Biscuits next.
Perfect the at home pumpkin spice latte. I’m going to give this recipe a go, but with oat milk for the perfect dairy free alternative.
Treat yourself to some spooky treats from Lush. The Halloween range has already dropped, and I’m excited for pumpkin bath bombs and a pumpkin spice lip scrub, and since the next mercury retrograde begins on Halloween, I’ll definitely be picking up the new Mercury Retrograde bath bomb!
Visit the Pick Your Own. I have a long standing love affair with the pick your own farm! I’m heading down this weekend to pick apples, the last of the summer berries and hopefully a few pumpkins too!
Make time for the things that make you happy. This season I’m prioritising long soaks in the tub, afternoon coffee dates with Con, time spent rambling in the forest, and early nights in bed with a cup of peppermint tea and a good book.
What’s on your autumn to do list?
