Thoughts On: Being a Blogger In An Instagrammer’s World

Instagram is the word on everyone’s lips these days, countless bloggers have written posts on why they think blogs are dying and Instagram is the way forward, views are down but likes are up, and with IGTV, Stories and your grid, there has never been more ways to connect with your audience on the little photo app.

I’ve had a lot of chat with blogger/influencer pals recently on the subject, they don’t necessarily want it to be the case, but they can’t deny Instagram is where it’s at. We’re devoting increasing amounts of time to the app, whilst reducing our blog posting schedules. It’s no longer just a place to share cute photos and let people you know when you’ve published a new blog post, but rather a standalone platform for unique content in it’s own right.

For some people, it’s not bad news. There are bloggers out there who just want to share, don’t really mind where that is, and are embracing Instagram, happy to leave their blogs behind. For me though, it’s a little trickier. I started blogging because writing has, and always will be my first love, and I feel like it’s the writing side that Instagram doesn’t support.

Don’t get me wrong, I love Instagram. I love the gorgeous imagery, the sense of community, and the fact it all feels very instant. It’s easier to chat to my followers on Instagram than in the comments of a blog post, and really, it’s easier to open up Instagram in a spare five minutes and engage, than to load up your favourite bloggers websites and sign in to comment systems. And I get that, I do.

I’m not ready to say goodbye to my blog, not even close, but I don’t want to be out of the Instagram loop either, so I’m trying to find ways to use both in a way that makes me and my audiences happy.

I’m trying to put plans in place over the next month to change the way I use both platforms. I want to keep longer, more informative content here, and move the more ‘just for fun’ stuff over to Instagram. I love the idea of using Stories for things like Empties and current product favourites, sharing recipes over on IGTV, and more and more recommendations on my grid. But I want you guys to enjoy it too, so I’d love to know what you guys think, and what you’d like to see where!

So for now, this blogger’s gonna keep blogging, but if you don’t follow me on Instagram yet, do, because you’ll be finding more and more of my content there too!

So what do you think? Is Instagram taking over?
